Diagnostic features

Pennate diatom, boat-shaped with rounded ends in valve view, rectangular with rounded ends in girdle view, with thickened silica underlying the central area. Similar to Eolimna, but the golden brown chloroplasts are H-shaped in healthy cells (vs two separate parietial chloroplasts, although they may degrade to that in older cells).
