Diagnostic features

Colonial chlorophyte, cells spindle-shaped (pointed ends) or cigar-shaped (rounded ends) arranged in roughly parallel clusters of 4, within a mucilaginous envelope (may be difficult to see).  Single parietal green chloroplast, pyrenoids usually absent.
