Diagnostic features

Colonial chlorophyte with bean-shaped cells, usually in groups of four attached together by branching strands of mucilage (similar to Dictyosphaerium, but with different cell shape and no enveloping mucilage). There is a single large green chloroplast per cell.

Found in the plankton of lakes and ponds
