Diagnostic features

Small ovoid cells, each set within a vase-like lorica.  Each cell has 2 flagella of unequal length protruding from the open end of the lorica. Chloroplasts are golden-brown. Usually a cluster of loricas attach to each other form motile branching colonies.

Typical habitats

Common in the plankton of lakes and ponds (not sewage ponds)
