The goal of this research priority area is to support land management and communities to mitigate and adapt to climate change. We investigate how the spatial configuration and management of landscapes enable multiple ecosystem services while meeting climate and freshwater objectives, preserving and enhancing biodiversity, integrating te ao Māori perspectives, and satisfying socio-economic objectives.
Research objectives
- Characterise and quantify bundles of adaptation services in New Zealand landscapes.
- Produce templates for climate-smart landscapes in New Zealand defined as spatial configurations of land-use and management that increase synergies between adaptation services, carbon sequestration and greenhouse gas mitigation, biodiversity conservation and other ecosystem services.
- Co-produce with stakeholders, including with iwi/hapu, adaptation pathways towards such climate-smart landscapes.
