Where does it occur?

This shrubland occurs on the S.I. east of the Main Divide at altitudes ranging from 730 to 1360 m and is generally less than 2 m in height.

Description

This alliance is dominated by Dracophyllum uniflorum in the canopy over the smaller shrubs Gaultheria crassa and G. depressa, the grasses Poa colensoi and Festuca novae-zelandiae and the herb Wahlenbergia albomarginata. The shrub Ozothamnus leptophyllus and the tall tussocks Chionochloa rigida and C. flavescens may be present. Strong indicator species include Dracophyllum uniflorum, Gaultheria crassa, and Celmisia spectabilis. Species richness is moderate, with on average 37 species per plot. Exotic species richness is also moderate, with on average 5 exotics species (13% of the total richness) on each plot.

Where does it occur?

This 7 600 ha association has been sampled on the South Island in montane areas east of the Main Divide, primarily in Canterbury. Sites occur on slopes ranging from 10º to 50º. Altitudes range from 730 to 1300 m.

Description

These shrublands range from 30 cm to 1.6 m tall.On average they have 33 species on a plot, but species richness may be as high as 45 species. Exotics comprise, on average, 13% of the species.
