Background

This is a list of about 1080 genera of Coleoptera in the New Zealand section of the N.Z. Arthropod Collection (NZAC) housed at the Mt Albert Research Centre, Auckland as of July 1995.

There are two parts to the list:

Single quotes (' ') around a generic name indicate that it appears to be incorrectly applied to the specimens in the collection, and that a new name is probably required. Generic names that are considered to be synonyms are in ordinary Roman type rather than italics.

The list is derived from a location guide to genera in the collection which is being constructed and updated as a dBase IV database. Names for the Coleoptera in this database were transcribed from handwritten or typewritten names on or in the NZAC insect store boxes housing pinned specimens. In addition, names used in the Fauna of New Zealand series were included even though some are not yet on the insect store boxes in the collection.

The spelling of most names has been checked using publications in the Fauna of New Zealand series, Kuschel (1990, Beetles in a suburban environment: a New Zealand case study. DSIR Plant Protection Report 3), and Hutton (1904, Index Faunae Novae Zealandiae. London, Dulau & Co.). Errors in the 1994 brought to the attention of the original authors' have been incorporated. Other changes were published by Drs Jan Klimaszewski and Charles Watt in their 1997 contribution on the Coleoptera families of New Zealand in the Fauna of New Zealand series.
