  • Project Leader on "Climate change impacts on land use suitability" for Deep South Challenge
  • Research Priority Area Leader on Ecosystem services state and trends in the "Characterising land resources" portfolio.
  • Programme Leader of "Innovative Data Analysis for reporting and decision making" (Ministry for Business, Innovation and Employment funding for 2014-2018). Development of techniques for better recording of provenance, uncertainties and workflow of indicators in the land, soil and biodiversity domains for environmental reporting.
  • Case study leader in "climate change impacts and implication" (MBIE programme) Development of integrated research in Kaituna catchment for future scenarios.
  • Development of models for mapping ecosystem services at national to regional scale

Major achievements in commercial, social and environmental areas

  • Coordinating Lead author in the InterGovernmental Platform for Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services. Contribution in Asia-Pacific assessment.
  • Awarded a research grant from Deep South National Science Challenge (in partnership with Our Land and Water National Science Challenge) to work on cliamte change impacts on land use suitability. 
  • Developed methodology for upscaling at regional and national scale greenhouse gas emission, carbon sequestration and other ecosystem services (water quality, water quantity, habitat provision, food&fibre) as a function of land use, soil and climate. 
  • Developed methodology for objective regional mapping and prioritising of wetlands from satellite. This provide overview information to local and central governments to better allocate resources in wetland conservation
  • Project leader in the national mapping of wetlands for the Waters of National Importance programme. This work led to the first national freshwater wetland map at 1:50,000 scale.
  • Developped international linkages with New Caledonia by setting up a project on erosion modeling to evaluate the impact of erosion due to mining in New Caledonia.
  • Developed methodology for regional mapping of land slides following the February 2004 storm in the Manawatu/Wanganui region. Participated to seminar for public awareness of erosion issues.
  • Regional contact for commercial promotion of Land Environments of New Zealand (LENZ). 
  • Ph.D thesis demonstrated the feasibility of automatic weed identification from near-ground digital cameras, which should lead to major reductions in herbicide use combined with increased effectiveness.
