Tools to assess the sustainability of buildings

Over the past 10 years, many tools have been created (particularly overseas) to assess the sustainability of the built environment. Some of the more notable tools include GreenStar (Australia and New Zealand), BREEAM (United Kingdom), LEED (North America), and NABERS (Australia). Most of these tools are structured to be used in the design stage of a project and can apply to many different types of buildings, as well as to neighbourhood developments. Some, like NABERS, assess actual environmental performance of existing buildings, or can be used to set performance goals of a new building.

Landcare Research has the capability to provide preliminary assessments of building projects using these various tools and to advise on potential improvements.
