Ferret and Stoat Research

This site provides an overview of recent or ongoing research on ferrets and stoats with a particular focus on work undertaken by Landcare Research scientists.
The information on ferret control includes information gathered from research in the late 1990s and from a website that was developed by Will Allen and Grant Norbury from that with funding from the Animal Health Board. The research used a participatory research approach to collate contributions from individuals and organisations such as the North Canterbury farming community, scientists from Manaaki Whenua /Landcare Research, as well as agency staff from the AHB, Canterbury Regional Council, and MAF Quality. Some of the information from that original site is included here and some of it comes from more recent research completed at Manaaki Whenua as outlined in the following pages.
Pest control is as important on privately owned land as it is on publically owned land, thus agencies often talk about needing ways of working with landowners to improve pest control efforts on or near areas of private land. Part of our research, therefore, has been on ways of working with people to support pest control.

The research on this site is part of ongoing science research into understanding the biology, ecology and control of stoats and ferrets. As such, the information here represents a "work in progress" and is only part of a growing understanding of these animals, their effects and their control.
