Ferret Control
Ferrets can be controlled by a range of different traps and trapping strategies and poisoning. Scent lures are also useful.Other pages that discuss ferret control are as follows:
The timing of control operations is important.
- Trapping to reduce ferret populations was most effective in late summer to autumn.
- Poison baits were most effective when laid in late summer, autumn and early winter.
Population recovery
Ferret populations recover quickly after control operations mainly due to reinvasion from areas where control did not occur. Reducing ferret numbers also increases the survival chances and reproductive capacity of the remaining animals.
This means that ongoing control is required to keep ferret numbers low and to give long-term protection to those species susceptible to ferret predation.
Landscape-scale perspectives on ferret ecology
Computer mapping of ferret movements in relation to vegetation cover and topography can help identify "hot spots" where ferrets may be particularly prevalent, and can help target those areas more effectively.
Pest control product retailers
A variety of traps, baits and poisons for controlling ferrets are available in New Zealand. A few retailers with websites are listed below.
