Satellite imagery
Satellite images are being used to assess:

Distance from Adélie colonies on Ross Island to open water and the pack ice edge

Ice concentration and disposition

| Light ice conditions – very little pack-ice in the region | Moderate ice condition – pack-ice in the foraging range of Adélies breeding on Ross Island |
At the colonies we assess:
- Distribution and abundance
- Breeding behaviour (recruitment, survivorship and emigration)
- Breeding success and chick condition
- Foraging effort and diet composition
- Sea-ice cover within the foraging range of the birds, using satellite imagery
