Highlights of the Hawkes Bay Safari & Seminar
Safari 19 February 2009
Lisa McGlinchey and Gary Clode did a sterling job of organising the safari. The focus of the safari was on the context in which LIUDD thinking is being applied in the Hawkes Bay, reflections on lost opportunities and directions for the future. We visited Plantation Drain, Te Awa Subdivision, Cross Country Drain, the Karamu Stream Project, Karituwhenua Stream and finished off with some refreshments at Clearview Winery!
We heard from Hawkes Bay Regional Council staff, Napier City Council staff, Hastings District Council staff, a local developer, local iwi and a community group. The diversity of voices added depth to a great day.
One interesting observation from local participants was that perhaps they should stop calling them drains – if they referred to them as streams then perhaps the focus might shift to the multiple outcomes that could be achieved by taking a more integrated approach.
The Hawkes Bay have set the bar high for our next safari in the Kapiti Coast!
Seminar 20 February 2009
The seminar was well attended with around 70 people participating in the day. The following the programme for the seminar, with links to each presentation. We really appreciated the input from Hastings District Council to the afternoon session – it was great to hear from a variety of perspectives within the Council, all of whom were committed to doing things differently and working together to deliver sustainable development.
