Ethanol preserved beetle specimens in the New Zealand Arthropod Collection; (NZAC)

Insecta: Coleoptera

Compiled by Mark Bullians, Rich Leschen and Stephen Thorpe. June 2005

Overview

The New Zealand Arthropod Collection is the main repository for New Zealand's invertebrates including Coleoptera. At NZAC curation and data basing of specimens is an on going process providing essential information for research in areas such as systematics, ecology, and conservation. The goal of the Beetle Database is to provide an efficient information retrieval system for such purposes.

The Beetle Database provides species level information on identified beetles, presence of adult, pupal and larval stages, and an indication of the amount of undetermined material in the collection.

The ethanol preserved collection of beetles contains more than 50,000 adults, 3,000 pupae and 60,000 larvae, including over 1035 determined species. Specimens are stored in 75 - 95% ethanol, suitable for DNA research. The Beetle Database is a condensed copy of a spreadsheet containing additional information about specimen numbers, localities, habitats, dates, collectors and identifiers. Information and loan material can be obtained on request from NZAC staff. The database will be updated periodically to include new records of species.
