This checklist records over 700 described
hymenopteran species from the New
Zealand biogeographic region.
A further 1000 or more undescribed or undetermined species are also recorded. The list is based upon Valentine and Walker's 1991 Annotated Catalogue of New Zealand Hymenoptera, which lists 549 species of Hymenoptera in 291 genera. Over 500 genera are recognised here. Forty-seven families are recorded from New Zealand, eight of which are only represented by introduced species (Tenthredinidae, Pergidae, Siricidae, Agaonidae, Scolebythidae, Mutillidae, Scoliidae and Vespidae).
