The included keys will enable users to identify leafhopper and treehopper genera or species known to occur in New Zealand. Digital images are provided for the majority of species. Users are referred to Larivière (2005 and updates) and Larivière, Fletcher & Larochelle (2010) for detailed information on valid names, synonymies as well as species distribution, biology, and dispersal.
Hyperlinks to useful references and to the NSW Agricultural Scientific Collections website that maintain information on the Australian fauna, are included in the keys as appropriate. Additional supporting characters are sometimes given between square brackets in the keys.
Confirmation of identifications, requiring dissection of the genitalia of male specimens, may need to be carried out (ideally by a trained taxonomist). Standard methodologies for this are presented under methods.
