Introduction
Growing demand for information on New Zealand Hemiptera, especially regarding nomenclature and taxonomy, suggests that maintaining up-to-date WWW checklists to families and valid species-group names is a desirable outcome that allows end-users to follow the progress of research on the faunistics and systematics of this group as well as maintains the currency of paper-based publications.
Wise's (1977: Bulletin of the Auckland Institute and Museum 11 ) checklist of Hexapoda recorded 46 families, 235 genera and 503 species of Hemiptera (excluding Sternorrhyncha) for New Zealand. Several genera and families have since been revised, nomenclatural changes have occurred, and new taxa have been documented. In addition, the Heteroptera have been catalogued in more details by Larivière & Larochelle (2004: Heteroptera (Insecta: Hemiptera): catalogue. Fauna of New Zealand 50: 330 pp).
Information about most taxonomic changes to the 1977 checklist may be found in publications listed in the Bibliography included here and in the 2004 Heteroptera catalogue (Fauna of New Zealand 50). A detailed catalogue of New Zealand Auchenorrhycha was submitted to the Fauna of New Zealand series in July 2009 .
As of July 2009, the fauna totals 43 families, 219 genera, and 532 species as follows:

This checklist is based on the Editor's own work towards more detailed accounts on New Zealand Hemiptera, especially the suborders Cicadomorpha, Fulgoromorpha, also known as the Auchenorrhyncha, and Heteroptera. The section dealing with Auchenorrhyncha has been compiled in collaboration with M.J. Fletcher (NSW Dept. of Primary Industries, Orange, Australia), and the section on Coleorrhyncha, with D. Burckhardt (Naturhistorisches Museum, Basel, Switzerland).
This checklist is being updated as required or appropriate. Authors of taxonomic changes
and other people with information about corrections or additions are encouraged
