Type species: Notopsalta sericea (Walker, 1850) - Clay Bank Cicada.
Characteristics of the genus.

Body background colour black; length less than 19 mm. Collar of pronotum more or less flanged (extended outward) laterally. Anterior wing: R crossveins not infuscate; pterostigma pigmented (not transparent); basal membrane neither red nor orange. Abdominal segments: mostly black dorsally; yellowish brown with dark marks along midline ventrally. Genitalia (see Dugdale, 1972: 869). Note: Maoricicada is also blackish in appearance, but the pterostigma of the anterior wing is transparent.

Included species.

Two: New Zealand (1), Australia (1).

Range.

New Zealand: Three Kings Islands, North Island. Australia: Southeast.

Habitat.

Lowland, mostly coastal; mainly on cliffs, clay banks, dunes, and roadsides; on bare ground surfaces, trees, scrub, and grass; also on the walls of buildings.
