New Zealand ground-beetle genera: Identification guide

This identification guide provides a Lucid Phoenix interactive key to New Zealand ground-beetle genera. Diagnostic characters are fully illustrated and dorsal body images are provided for one representative species of each genus included in the identification key.

An alphabetical checklist of genera, a glossary of technical terms, and the following schematic views of carabid morphology are also provided to aid identification:

This identification key to the New Zealand Carabidae genera was created using Lucid Phoenix. The Phoenix application is a JAVA-based applet that loads a pathway key that works very much like a traditional dichotomous key. To run the identification key, users need to have the JAVA Virtual Machine (JVM) v1.4.2 or greater installed on their computer.

WARNING! Trechini and Migadopini genera in the key not yet up-to-date with the literature.

Java download button Get JMV Note: JVM only needs to be installed once for any Lucid Phoenix key to be run thereafter.

Once the JAVA Virtual Machine is installed users can use the following link or image to open the key:

Notes about the current version of this key

  • Key couplets are illustrated; schematic views of carabid morphology and other complementary identification aids are also available on this website.

  • One full dorsal body image is also included for one representative species of each genus.

  • Although this is an artificial key to genera not necessarily intended to identify carabid tribes, tribal entries have been indicated to underline generic relationships.
