The Ants of New Zealand
New Zealand, like other oceanic islands, has a depauperate (species-poor) ant fauna. There are currently about 39 confirmed species from 23 genera in New Zealand (the exact number of Monomorium and Pachycondyla species is unclear). Of these, only 11 are native species, 9 of which are endemic (found only in New Zealand). Nine other species are doubtful records (either due to taxonomic uncertainties or because they probably have not established). The endemic species are generally widespread geographically, mainly in forested habitats.
