Sirtrack - a year of growth
Sirtrack is a wholly owned New Zealand subsidiary of Landcare Research, and provides innovative wildlife tracking solutions that contribute to reversing the decline in biodiversity and reducing pest impacts on ecosystems.
The company achieved significant growth this year. Sales revenue grew 58% to a record $4.2 million, in accordance with a 3-year plan. The team at Sirtrack increased from 18 to 28 people to support this growth and build for the future, with numbers in the Engineering and Sales & Marketing teams doubling. This increased investment is critical to Sirtrack’s strategy of leading the world in providing wildlife-tracking solutions. Excellence in customer service and technology leadership are crucial to Sirtrack’s success and in adding value for its customers – wildlife researchers.
In the past year Sirtrack’s latest products, the Proximity Logger, which logs interactions between animals, and Fastloc, a GPS receiver designed to operate in conditions where other GPS systems fail, moved into the mainstream of tracking tools. Sirtrack’s ongoing product plan will deliver a range of new products, including: a micro GPS unit – an ultra-light GPS data logger for use on small species; an Argos (satellite)-linked GPS unit that allows data to be downloaded remotely via Argos Satellites; and UHF and GSM (mobile phone standard) links that allow remote download of data using a local cellular network or a close-range UHF receiver. These products remove the need to recapture an animal to retrieve data, and so produce real benefits for both researchers and their study animals.
Sirtrack has also increased the quality and quantity of its website information to help customers make better choices. The website revamp has increased its popularity as a source of information. The website will be further enhanced with new features in an ongoing effort to increase its usefulness to the research community.
A major overhaul of Sirtrack’s business systems will support improved response to our customers’ requests and ultimately result in shorter lead times. Additionally, Sirtrack plans to establish support representatives in key markets around the world.
Finally, a key component of Sirtrack’s growth will be establishing relationships and networks that not only increase opportunities to deliver solutions but also provide valuable input into the expectations and needs of researchers globally. To that end Sirtrack is continuing to develop existing relationships with partners including Landcare Research and DOC, as well as new ones with similar organisations in other market regions.
