Royal Society of New Zealand Fellow:

Ross Beever was one of 12 new Fellows elected to the Fellowship of the Royal Society at the Academy Council of the Royal Society of New Zealand. This recognises Ross’ s outstanding contributions to mycology (fungal research), plant pathology and New Zealand botany over more than 30 years of very active research.

 

New Zealand Institute of Agricultural & Horticultural Science Fellow:

Ross Beever was also awarded this Fellowship in recognition of his contribution to New Zealand’s horticultural and agricultural industries.


Bronze Medal from the Royal Society of New Zealand:

Bruce Warburton was awarded one of five Bronze Medals from the Royal Society of New Zealand, for his significant contribution to progressing the humane treatment of wildlife in research and management, both nationally and internationally.


New Zealand Science Communicator’s Award:

Peter Buchanan was awarded the 2004 Science Communicator’s Award from the New Zealnd Association of Scientists for eff orts in promoting events like BioBlitz and Fungal Forays, and for his passion and commitment to communicating science in schools and to the public.


Norman Taylor Memorial Award:

Graham Sparling received the Norman Taylor Memorial Award from the NZ Soil Science Society. This recognises Graham as one of New Zealand’s top soil scientists, with an outstanding contribution to soil science. Graham completed presentations of the prestigious Norman Taylor lecture at Hamilton, Palmerston North and Lincoln. The lecture “Broad shoulders, small feet” traversed global sustainability and the role of soils in sustainable settlements.

Winston Churchill Fellowship:

Guodong Yuan was awarded a Fellowship from the Winston Churchill Memorial Trust to visit Canada and study Canadian policy on, and strategies for, developing hydrogen technology. As well as studying advances in the technology, the Fellowship enabled Guodong to develop links there for the benefit of New Zealand. Only seven Churchill Fellowships were funded from nearly ten times as many applications.

Officer of the New Zealand Order of Merit:

Bill Sykes, a research associate with Manaaki Whenua, Lincoln, was honoured in the Queen’s Birthday Honours list for his significant contributions to the flora of the Pacific, to raising public awareness of the dangers of poisonous plants, as well as to plant biosystematics and the management of endangered plants in New Zealand.
