In accordance with GRI
The Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) is an international framework for voluntary sustainable development reporting. This is the fourth year that we have reported "in accordance" with GRI guidelines. The GRI guidelines, which are used by over 600 organisations worldwide, are increasingly regarded as the best available model for corporate disclosure on social, environmental and ethical issues.

Participation in GRI
Our commitment to reporting in accordance with the GRI guidelines reflects our aim to provide meaningful and relevant information for our stakeholders. The development of our reporting is further enhanced by the involvement of two of our managers in both the governance of the GRI and in development of the guidelines.
Richard Gordon, one of our science managers, is a member of the GRI Stakeholder Council. Council members are elected as individuals rather than representatives of organisations, but all bring valuable perspectives from their positions in leading NGOs, businesses, consultancy and research agencies, and labour organisations. Richard is one of ten members representing the Asia-Pacific region. The Council's role is to provide strategic and technical advice to the GRI Board and Secretariat, and to raise awareness of the GRI within their regions.
The development of the GRI guidelines and other products is the work of technical workgroups. The GRI's core framework is the 2002 sustainability reporting guidelines. This is about to be updated and Ian Whitehouse, our Chief Operating Officer- Research, is participating in the development of the third generation of the guidelines due to be released in 2006.
Declaration
This report has been prepared in accordance with the 2002 GRI guidelines. It represents a balanced and reasonable presentation of our organisation's economic, environmental and social performance.
