Good employer performance

We provide career development and training opportunities, in addition to Fellowships.

Go to Equal Opportunities Trust websiteWe are committed to being a good employer beyond our legislative responsibilities. We believe that if Manaaki Whenua adheres to manaaki tangata values (health, safety, development, rewards), staff will be more satisfied with both their work and life. We are not aware of any legislative non-compliance occuring during the year.

Rewarding staff

Safety & health

We attained Tertiary Accreditation in the ACC Partnership Programme during the year — one of only 58 companies to have reached this level in the country.

* affected by accidents in previous years; we lost only 20 days to accidents in 2003/04.
# benchmark data from other CRIs.

We introduced an optional Health Care Plan that includes a health check-up (provided to 228 staff during the year) and continued other initiatives such as free flu vaccinations and melanoma checks.

Managing funding changes

In September 2003 we lost PGS&T funding for some research. Altogether 23 staff were affected by unfavourable funding decisions. Of the 23, two staff resigned, five took redundancy, five others accepted reduced hours, and 11 staff remain in full employment with us. For some this meant change —with some very positive benefits. Chris Bailey, for example, has taken on a completely new role as our ‘front man’ for Enviro-Mark®NZ in Auckland. Enviro-Mark®NZ is Manaaki Whenua’s environmental, health and safety management system.
