The excellence of our science and our people is widely recognised

The expertise and professionalism of our staff continue to be recognised by professional peers and stakeholders as evidenced by:

Eleven staff received prestigious awards. These recognised not only the significant science contributions made by senior researchers, for example, Kevin Tate’s ML Leamy Award for the “most meritorious contribution to soil science published in the last three years”, but also excellence in research by our young scientists (e.g., Adrian Walcroft’s Hamilton Memorial Prize, James Ataria’s To Tohu Putaiao Toiora Award). It is pleasing to see this talent recognised. Manaaki Whenua staff are on the editorial panels of over 50 international journals and lead 11 of New Zealand’s scientific societies as President or Vice-president. Forty-seven staff are honorary lecturers or research associates of universities.

Citation rate is a measure of the impact of a publication. More than 80% of papers published globally are cited by other authors less than 10 times; 40% are not cited at all. Four publications involving Manaaki Whenua staff have been cited more than 100 times since publication. In 2002/03, each was cited a further 24 times on average.

"In 2002 I received the Hamilton Memorial Prize from the Academy of the Royal Society of New Zealand. This prize is awarded annually for a principal paper published within 5 years of conferral of a PhD. My paper—a result of my PhD studies— explained seasonal patterns in stable carbon isotope ratios within tree rings. I am grateful to my supervisor and friend, Professor Warwick Silvester, who considered my work worthy of nomination for the prize. I feel honoured to be following in the footsteps of previous recipients, such as palaeontologist Charles Fleming and plant ecologist Colin Burrows"

I was awarded Te Tohu Putaiao Toiora for Biological Sciences, an honour that is also shared with family, friends, colleagues and other Māori who have attained high levels of educational achievement. ”
