Science Making a Difference
We
work on New Zealand’s most important environmental issues.
Manaaki Whenua’s core purpose is to provide leadership in research on New Zealand’s most important land-based environmental issues, and to support the development of public policies and management systems that:
- sustain the full range of indigenous biodiversity across representative landscapes and enable all New Zealanders to share in its benefits
- deliver biosecurity management systems based on sound risk assessments and reduce the impact of New Zealand’s worst environmental pests
- enhance the ability of the rural sector to deliver environmentally, socially and economically sustainable production systems
- improve New Zealand’s ability to meet its obligations under the Kyoto Protocol, and manage and mitigate the effects of global climate change in ways that also benefit indigenous biodiversity
- improve urban design to enhance the quality of urban life and reduce the environmental and energy footprint of our cities
- support implementation of a national sustainable development strategy across central and local government, and public and private enterprises.
We work in partnership with New Zealand Government agencies and local bodies. In 2002/03 we undertook research contracts totalling $7.0m for the Department of Conservation (DOC), the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry (MAF), the Ministry for the Environment (MfE), other public sector clients, and the Animal Health Board (AHB). Close contractual partnerships, regular meetings and involvement of staff from those agencies in our research help ensure our science is aligned with their needs.
