Highlights of the Annual Report 2002

Economic

• Our strong financial performance continued with turnover of $42.7 million and operating profit of $2.8 million.
  
  
• We joined with Genesis R&D to investigate a promising new approach for controlling botrytis, a major horticulture disease.
  
  
• We showed how land covered in regenerating scrub could potentially earn New Zealand more than $100 million/yr in carbon credits.
  
  
• ICANZ recognised us as a leader in triple bottom line reporting with three awards for our 2001 Annual Report, including the premier award.

Social and Cultural

• We funded 18 post- doctoral positions in 2002.
  
  
• We supported eight scholarships to Māori university students.
  
  
• We signed an agreement with Auckland University encompassing five joint research areas and building new facilities at the Tamaki campus.
  
  
• Tu-hoe took over managing the kiwi recovery programme at the conclusion of our 10-year research programme with Tu-hoe and DOC at Lake Waikaremoana

Environment

• DOC based their new system for prioritising conservation management on our research.
  
  
• Our public good research funding increased with new programmes on tourism impacts and pollination risks from GM -crops to native plants.
  
  
• We bred stoats in captivity, a first for New Zealand, in efforts to develop more effective controls for these predators of native birds.
