Winner of three prizes at the Institute of Chartered Accountants of NZ Annual Report Awards 2002

This Annual Report on our sustainable development is our first full triple bottom line report covering all dimensions of our financial performance, as well as our environmental and social performance. Sustainable management of resources is our business so we have a responsibility to improve our own performance as well as that of others. The Annual Report can be downloaded either in sections (see below) or as a complete document. A brief overview is also available on-line.

Key highlights

Highlights include:
  • achieving record revenue of $42.75 million, a record operating surplus of $3.55 million, and paid a maiden dividend of $3.5 million. The dividend will contribute to the Government's Venture Investment Fund;
  • Sirtrack, our subsidiary based in Havelock North, grew global sales of specialised wildlife tracking equipment to more than $2.2 million;
  • initiating EBEX21 (Emissions/Biodiversity Exchange 21) to help organisations offset their greenhouse gas emissions by restoring native forest biodiversity;
  • reducing the amount of CO 2 emitted from our activities by 5% compared to 1999/2000. Our electricity consumption was down 4.6%.

Our science is helping in halting the decline of New Zealand's biodiversity, solving New Zealand's worst environmental pest problems, sustaining the quality of our soils, increasing carbon sequestration, reducing New Zealand's ecological footprint, and our science reflects public values and aspirations.Featured work includes:

  • the land environments classification - a national framework for reporting on environmental performance and biodiversity;
  • experimental studies showing that some species are more important than others in driving the healthy functioning of ecosystems;
  • the Visual Soil Assessment - a simple field method for assessing soil quality;
  • EBEX21 - native bush and forest regeneration to mitigate CO 2 emissions from companies.

This section covers our work with other researchers, stakeholders and collaborators in central and local government agencies, business enterprises and local communities. The section includes:

Our environmental performance

Covers our resource use and waste production (including paper use and recycling, electricity use, solid waste composition), our motor vehicle and air travel, our eco-balance (the imputed CO 2 emissions from our activities) and the native forest restoration to offset the emissions, our use of animals in research, animal bycatch in our field work, our use of genetic modification (including to develop a possum fertility control product) and the public acceptance of GM possum control.
