Public event: BioBlitz 2008 (Auckland)
Date: Friday, 4 April 2008
- Saturday, 5 April 2008
Time:
3:00:00 p.m. -
3:00:00 p.m.
Location:
Smith’s Bush and Onewa Domain, Northcote Rd, Northcote, North Shore City
BioBlitz is a scientific race against time. It is educational. And it is heaps of fun!
The goal is to count as many species as possible in a 24-hour survey of a large urban area. The emphasis is on recording the total number of species, not naming every creature that has been found.
BioBlitz is a unique opportunity for scientists, students and the public to experience the vast array of species (biodiversity) living in an urban reserve. It is rare for so many different types of biologists to be able to work together in the same place, at the same time and on the same project.
This is a free event for all the family!
Join us in the BioBlitz marquee, staffed by scientists along with their microscopes and computers. There will be numerous photographic and interactive displays and opportunities to talk to scientists. A programme of ‘field trips’ with scientists will also be organised … these are wonderful opportunities for all the family to find out from the experts what is living in all sorts of corners of Smith’s Bush.
Teachers … an opportunity for your school!
12.00 - 2.30 pm
A special programme of activities will be organised for participating schools before BioBlitz-2008 gets under way. These will start about 12.00 pm and are expected to run through until 2.30 pm. There will be opportunities for groups to participate in several activities during that time. Students and their families are then also welcome to join us throughout the 24 hour period of BioBlitz-2008.
If you wish to bring a school group along for this organised programme, please contact Grace Hall, HallGR@LandcareResearch.co.nz, ph. 574 4107; or Peter Buchanan, BuchananP@LandcareResearch.co.nz, ph. 574 4166, mob. 0274 341 832.
BioBlitz-2008 is being organised by Landcare Research with Auckland Regional Council, University of Auckland and Auckland Museum representatives. Many other organisations will also taking part.
You are very welcome to join the scientists at base camp where you can see displays about different kinds of life in our city; learn how scientists identify organisms; learn about science and talk with scientists; watch the tally of the number of organisms grow during the 24 hours.
