Best AVHRR Images of the 95/96 Summer on CDROM

Manaaki Whenua - Landcare Research NZ Ltd collects and archives low resolution satellite data of New Zealand twice every day. Most of these images are covered in cloud but, occasionally, there are superb cloud free images collected.

As a side project from the research we have undertaken using NOAA-14 satellite data (AVHRR HRPT), we have made available for sale a Compact Disc containing the best (cloud-free) data of five 1995/1996 summer months.

All imagery covers the entirety of New Zealand, including Stewart Island, and is rectified to the NZ Map Grid (NZMG).

There are 36 Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer images of New Zealand and the near coastal seas extracted from the 3000 x 3000 kilometre full AVHRR images. These images can be used for studies of topography, seasonal variations in vegetation growth and health, sea surface and land temperatures, just pretty pictures, and many more.

The CD contents are presented using the Internet's Hypertext Markup Language (HTML) so any computer platform with a WWW browser should be able to read it. The image formats included are JPEG, TIFF (AVHRR bands 1, 2, 4), and, for serious research, ERDAS Imagine (full five band, 10bpp data). The image width and heights are all 1024 x 1470 pixels and have a spatial resolution of one kilometre.

The CD also includes information on the NOAA-14 platform and sensor, the Landcare Research receiving station, the CD structure and image formats, our full calibration details (including georeferencing and general processing). These are very comprehensive. For new users of satellite data we have included a glossary of terms to assist in reading related material.

BONUS: We have included the spectacular 17 June (and following two days) Mount Ruapehu eruption images as seen on our Ruapehu page, the difference being that the CD versions are of a higher quality and covers the whole country.
