Goals:

  • Minimise our contribution to the municipal sewer system
  • Use compost for gardens on site

Composting toilets

Composting toilets have been used on levels 1 & 2 (not practical for the ground floor)

  • two large Clivus Multrum composting units cater for seven toilets
  • tanks need emptying only about 2x / year
  • system meets composting toilets and waste disposal standards
  • compost can be used safely on surrounding gardens.

Liquid waste to the sewer system

Liquid waste from the composting tanks, urinals (manual flush), wash basins (low volume taps) all drains into the public sewer system. Wastewater from laboratories flows via in situ sediment / dilution traps to a 1000 litre detention / dilution tank, before entering the sewer system.

Total volume of liquid draining to the sewer is considerably less than from a conventional building.
