Collections

Manaaki Whenua is kaitiaki of national collections of plants, animals (insects) and fungi which include examples of New Zealand's native flora and fauna preserved for scientific examination. By adding new samples every day, the collections are kept up to date.

These collections are taonga of which Manaaki Whenua are kaitiaki on behalf of Aotearoa and Te Wai Pounamu.

  • ICMP culture collection
    ICMP is a major international collection of plant bacteria, and a repository for microorganisms of plant and animal origin of the New Zealand Reference Culture Collection.
  • New Zealand Fungal Herbarium (PDD)
    Herbarium PDD is recognised as a Nationally Significant Collection. It is the world´s foremost collection of New Zealand fungi, and is one of the few sizeable collections of fungi in the Southern Hemisphere.

  • Allan Herbarium
    The Allan Herbarium contains species from around the world but specialises in plants (indigenous and exotic) of the New Zealand region and Pacific. It also has specialist collections of seed, fruit, wood, plant leaf cuticle, liquidpreserved specimens, and microscope slides. The oldest samples are the 91 duplicate specimens collected by Banks and Solander during Captain Cook´s first voyage to New Zealand, 17691770.
  • Māori cultural use of plants database
  • The National New Zealand Flax Collection
    Manaaki Whenua is kaitiaki of the national collection of New Zealand flax selections (harakeke, Phormium spp.), which includes traditional weaving varieties donated by Rene Orchiston of Gisborne.
  • Ti Kouka collection (cabbage trees)
    Ti kouka seeds collected from populations in 28 localities throughout New Zealand were sown in 1994 and seedlings planted out in spring 1995.
